VIKING Norsafe MUNIN S1200 Cabin HCG

This article is about a new craft made by VIKING Norsafe Hellas, the MUNIN S1200 Cabin HCG, that will serve with the Hellenic Coast Guard. Until now, among other products and vessels, the Greek company has delivered one (1) MUNIN S1200 Cabin and eight (8) MUNIN S1200 Extended Cabin to the Hellenic Coast Guard, one (1) MUNIN S1200 Open and one (1) MUNIN S1200 Tactical to the Hellenic Army and soon will start the construction of the first of the total 41 MUNIN S1200 Armored for the Hellenic Army, the 6th sub-type of MUNIN S1200 in the Greek inventory. All vessels were built locally in Greece at the manufacturing plant of VIKING Norsafe Hellas in Thiva. The new vessel is very similar to the MUNIN S1200 Cabin but it is equipped with different electronics and is fitted with inboard diesel engines. The boat is a donation from REGGEBORGH INVEST B.V. to the Special Missions Unit of the Central Port Authority of Kerkyra (Corfu). The Norsafe Munin S-1200 represents a state of the art platform for all professional user groups requiring the highest possible quality in terms of seaworthiness, user friendliness and safety at sea in all conditions.

The new MUNIN S1200 HCG has an overall length of 12m, beam of 3.5m and maximum draft of 0.9 m. The craft has a top speed of about 70kt with full fuel and 4 persons and more than 50kt at full load. This is the fastest boat in the Hellenic Coast Guard inventory! This is because it powered by a triple Mercury Verado 450R hp outboard installation in comparison with the MUNIN S1200 Tactical and Armored sub-types that are fitted with 3 x 400hp. It is capable of carrying 4 persons inside its pilot house on shock mitigation seats while it has the capacity to transport up to 12 people in total.

MUNIN S1200 Cabin HCG

The vessel has provision for two machine guns fitted on pedestals behind the cabin. Hull is made of vinyl ester infused fiberglass sandwich. Core material is high density Divinicell and layers are quadra directional mats. The deck is also made of infused fiberglass sandwich but with lower weight and density of the building materials. The hull is a two stepped deep-V type with transom with shock mitigation, stability and maneuverability, built to provide optimal sea keeping ability at all speeds and in all conditions. Craft is certified to operate in winds up to Beaufort Force 8 and a significant wave height up to 4 m. A heavy duty polyethylene fender, protected by a double skin of reinforced PVC, protects the hull by absorbing impacts. The deck is covered with heavy duty anti-slip surface.

The electronic equipment of the boat is provided by Navico and includes Simrad Halo 24 navigation radar, Lowrance MFDs, FLI E/O sensor, Ritchie 100 mm magnetic compass, Simrad RS40 Marine VHF Radio Class D and AIRMAR P79 depth transducer. On the rooftop there are antennas for VHF and GPS, navigation lights, EPIRB, loud hailer and a LED remotely controlled searchlight. In the forward part there is a cabin suitable for the accommodation of the staff, WC as well as other storage areas. In the aft part of the cockpit there is free deck space suitable for the operational needs of the crew.

The boat is designed to serve the patrol, boarding and inspection role, with deck layout allowing the crew to operate efficiently and comfortably over long periods of time. The layout and performance of the boat ensures optimum survey and workboat duties. Note that the study and construction of the boat was carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy.
